More about Postpartum Doula

What is a Postpartum Doula? A non-medical professional that provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period in the home.

And how and why did I become a Postpartum Doula?  When I was young and teachers would ask, what do you want to do/be when you grow up?  My answer wasy alwasy, “I want to be a mom!”  I am the second of seven children, and loved babies ever since I can remember.  I started helping with my younger siblings and babysitting at a young age.  During college I was a live-in nanny for two years.  Today, I am a mother to four amazing children, and four beautiful grandchildren; which brings me immense joy, but I am also a Postpartum Doula to hundreds.

The first time I heard about a postpartum doula was after I had my first son at a birth center with a midwife and a nurse in 1991.  I was just amazed and loved the whole birth process; it made me want to be a Midwife.  When I mentioned this to my birth nurse she said “you know what you would be great at?  A Birth or Postpartum Doula.”  I remember giving it a thought and loving the idea, but I was so involved in being a mom myself, I put off the thought of that career for a while.  During my own postpartum period I had just two week's support from visiting family.  It was a struggle, we had a few weeks of tough times with feeding, and I remember being so tired and overwhelmed.

I became a nursing mother's counselor after my own experience, to help other new moms and support them with their breastfeeding experience.  Then Fast forward twenty years, I was looking for a career that I could do full time once all my kids were in school.  I considered becoming a nurse, and my sister reminded me about Birth and Postpartum Doula work.  I searched out the education I needed, and became certified in both Birth and Postpartum Doula, and the rest is history.  That was in Dec 2007, and I have been a full-time postpartum doula since that time.

There are so many reasons why I love what I do.

  • I get the opportunity to teach new parents the skills they need to care for their newborns.
    • Often parents feel overwhelmed and unsure of themselves just like I did in the first few weeks after their baby is born.
  • As a postpartum doula I have the chance to offer guidance and support and comfort to these parents, showing them how to feed, bathe, swaddle and soothe their babies.
    • It is incredibly rewarding to see the confidence grow in the new parents as they learn to care for their newborn and learn to trust their own intuition. They develop their own parenting style and learn new skills and strategies for caring for their newborn.
  • I am also able to offer a range of services, including emotional support, breastfeeding support, practical help with tasks like folding clothes and light housekeeping, feeding and sleep schedules. Seeing the relief and gratitude on the faces of parents when I can step in and offer support is a rewarding aspect.
  • Knowing that I am making a positive impact on the lives of new parents and their babies is truly a fulfilling experience and it is one of the reasons I am enthusiastic about the work that I do.

I can’t forget the most joyful part of being a postpartum doula is being able to spend time with new born babies.  Holding babies and seeing their growth and development is truly a joy.  It is amazing to see how quickly they learn and adapt, and I feel privileged to be a part of their journey.  I love what I do, and I do what I love so I don’t feel like I work a day.  Overall being a postpartum doula is a fulfilling and enriching profession that allows me to make a real difference in the lives of parents and their precious little ones.  It is an honor and special privilege.
