What is a Postpartum Doula? A non-medical professional that provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period in the home.
And how and why did I become a Postpartum Doula? When I was young and teachers would ask, what do you want to do/be when you grow up? My answer wasy alwasy, “I want to be a mom!” I am the second of seven children, and loved babies ever since I can remember. I started helping with my younger siblings and babysitting at a young age. During college I was a live-in nanny for two years. Today, I am a mother to four amazing children, and four beautiful grandchildren; which brings me immense joy, but I am also a Postpartum Doula to hundreds.
The first time I heard about a postpartum doula was after I had my first son at a birth center with a midwife and a nurse in 1991. I was just amazed and loved the whole birth process; it made me want to be a Midwife. When I mentioned this to my birth nurse she said “you know what you would be great at? A Birth or Postpartum Doula.” I remember giving it a thought and loving the idea, but I was so involved in being a mom myself, I put off the thought of that career for a while. During my own postpartum period I had just two week's support from visiting family. It was a struggle, we had a few weeks of tough times with feeding, and I remember being so tired and overwhelmed.
I became a nursing mother's counselor after my own experience, to help other new moms and support them with their breastfeeding experience. Then Fast forward twenty years, I was looking for a career that I could do full time once all my kids were in school. I considered becoming a nurse, and my sister reminded me about Birth and Postpartum Doula work. I searched out the education I needed, and became certified in both Birth and Postpartum Doula, and the rest is history. That was in Dec 2007, and I have been a full-time postpartum doula since that time.
There are so many reasons why I love what I do.
I can’t forget the most joyful part of being a postpartum doula is being able to spend time with new born babies. Holding babies and seeing their growth and development is truly a joy. It is amazing to see how quickly they learn and adapt, and I feel privileged to be a part of their journey. I love what I do, and I do what I love so I don’t feel like I work a day. Overall being a postpartum doula is a fulfilling and enriching profession that allows me to make a real difference in the lives of parents and their precious little ones. It is an honor and special privilege.
